A Study on the Effects of Senile Disease and Depression on the Seniors` Ideation of Suicide

Abstract
This stydy is aimed to empirically investigate the effects on the senior¡¯s ideation of suicide by analyzing the survey results focusing on the seniors aged 65 or older residing in 5 areas in Seoul(the eastern, westerm, southern, northern and central areas) based on the data sourced from National Police Agency. According to this data, the suicide rate of the Korean seniors is higher than that of the seniors residing in the other OECD member countries as it is emerging as a serious social problem. The result of the analysis indicates that the senile disease and depression were highly related so that they were set as causal variables, In addition, analysis was done on the difference of the seniors¡¯ suicide from the other types of suicide in accordance with the population sociology on the effects of senile disease and depression on suicide accident by frequency analysis, correlation, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis, and also such two variables were verified on their causation by path analysis, which was executed to find out the path of such vaiables and then draw their direct and indirect effectson suicide accident, This study indicates that it is valuable and necessary to study more deeply the causes and reasons of suicide behaviors in the viewpoint of real life and social system to prevent the seniors from suicide and build social safety net. Furthermore, the study itself will be valuable and meaningful enough to become a factor that can enhance the seniors¡¯ life quality before the aged society.
